Introduction:-

  • One of his kind, the gorgeous brute batsman 'Sir Cuthbert Gordon Greenidge' was the former West Indian player who was the masterclass and ferocious opener of cricket history.                                                                                                                   
  • Brute and tremendous hitting, It was evident that the power of Greenidge's strokeplay was the same as his ability to run between wickets. He was a busy player throughout.                                                                                                                                                
  • Brute behaviour and attacking were god gifted to him as he smashed even the best bowling attacks of that time. He had achieved success in his whole test career with the combination of great talent and discipline.

First ride:-

  • Before he played for Barbados, he joined the English county cricket in the 1970s.                                                                                                                                            
  • The English team was interested in Greenidge because of his brilliant performance on Hampshire's county team for many seasons but he decided to play for the West Indian team.                                                                                                                                                   

Test Carrier:-

  • To play his first test match, he Joined the West Indian team in 1974 as an opener. He scored 93 runs in his first-ever test innings with the help of 13 fours and 3 sixes.                                                                                                                                                        
  • He played 108 Test matches during his career from '1974 lasted 1991'.                                                                                                                                         
  • When West Indies toured England in 1976, he scored a fantastic 591 runs in the whole series with the help of 3 thunderous centuries for his team to lead 3-0 against the hosts.
  • He made World Record Partnerships with Desmond Haynes. He had played 148 Innings with him and scored 6482 Runs with an excellent average of 47.31 and 16-century stands together.                                                                                                                               
  • During his test career, he scored 7558 runs with an average of 44.72 runs per innings, including fabulous 19 Centuries and 34 fifties

Favourite Shot:-

Sir Gordon Greenidge was known for his aggressive batting style, and his favourite shot was slogging over long-on. This shot involved using his powerful physique to generate maximum bat speed. He hit the ball hard and high over the long-on fielder's head for six runs. Greenidge was a master at this shot, executing it with remarkable accuracy and power, even against the fastest bowlers. His ability to clear the boundary efficiently and score quick runs made him a feared batsman in world cricket. Overall, Greenidge's love of slogging over long-on shots testified to his fearless approach to batting and ability to dominate the opposition. That's why cricket journalists call him a ferocious opener and the batsman of the famous world-beating West Indian team.

ODI carrier:-

  • In April 1975, he played his debut match against Pakistan in Birmingham(England).                                                                                                     
  • In 1988 he made record making Century. This is the first time in the history of One Day Internationals that a player had made a Century in his 100th appearance.  
                                                                                
  • When West Indies won both World Cups (1975 & 1979). He was one of the playing 11 of that team.

Golden Milestones:-

  • He was the first batter in ODI history who made a century in his 100th inning.                                                                                                                      
  • On the 22nd of November of 1974, he made a century on his debut vs India at (Bengaluru).                                                                                                                       
  • He had another list A cricket record in that, he made centuries on both innings of a test match vs England at (Manchester), on 8 Jul 1976.                                     
  • The same 100 and 90 runs in a test match was another milestone of his.                                                                                                                          
  • The list A cricket record of making 5000 runs and taking 50 catches in the whole Test carrier is an unforgettable milestone of his.                           
  • He was also made World Records Partnerships with D. Haynes. He played 148 Innings with him and scored 6482 runs, these partnerships are still discussed today.

Last Ride:-

  • He played his last Test match against Australia on April 27, 1991, at the venue of (ST John's) cricket stadium.                                                                                                                   
  • He played his last ODI match against England on 25/5/1991, at the venue of (Manchester) cricket stadium.
